Personality models do not all divide descriptive language in the same way. The familiar Big Five is one influential structure, but Saucier's preliminary seven-factor work retains two additional evaluative dimensions alongside five broad trait scales. That difference matters: a seven-factor result should be read on its own terms, not squeezed into a five-factor personality type.

The preliminary International Personality Item Pool (IPIP) seven-factor set uses 70 statements, with 10 items for each of seven scales. It reports separate raw totals for Extraversion, Agreeableness, Conscientiousness, Emotional Stability, Intellect, Attractiveness, and Negative Valence. There is no combined personality score.

Each scale is continuous. A total near one end of its possible 10 to 50 range records how the statements were answered; it does not by itself establish that the respondent is low, average, or high compared with a population. Such language requires a relevant comparison sample and a documented method.

The scales are preliminary and depend on self-report. Mood, context, language, culture, memory, and impression management can influence the profile. Use it for voluntary reflection, education, or suitable research preparation, not diagnosis, treatment, hiring, selection, eligibility, or a fixed personality label.

How to Use This Tool:

Keep the same broad reference point throughout the 70 statements, such as how you generally are now.

  1. Select Start assessment and rate the accuracy of each statement from Very inaccurate to Very accurate.
  2. Choose the response that best fits your general pattern. Use the neutral response for a genuinely mixed fit, not as a substitute for reading the item.
  3. Complete all 70 statements. Use the progress bar and navigator to return to any unanswered item before finishing.
  4. Compare the seven totals in the Seven-factor profile, then review the contributing answers when a result conflicts with how you understood the scale.
  5. If you copy a share link, confirm that you are willing to place all 70 raw responses in a portable URL fragment.

Interpreting Results:

The seven raw totals share the same 10 to 50 theoretical range because every scale contains ten equally weighted items. This permits a within-profile comparison of their numerical positions, but it does not make the constructs interchangeable or turn the highest total into a person's defining trait.

  • Higher means more endorsement of the named scale's keyed direction. It never means universally better.
  • The highest and lowest totals are relative to this response set only, not to other adults or a reference population.
  • Attractiveness and Negative Valence are provisional scale names. Do not turn them into objective judgments about appearance, character, credibility, or worth.
  • Review reverse-keyed contributions when an answer appears to point in the opposite direction from its scale total.

A repeated assessment is most comparable when the same language, form, response scale, and answering context are kept stable. Even then, a changed total may reflect context or response style rather than a lasting personality change.

Technical Details:

The 70 items are interleaved across seven scales, but scoring groups ten keyed items into each named total. The five response choices use raw codes 1 through 5. Negative-keyed statements are reversed so that every contribution points toward greater endorsement of its scale's named direction.

Formula Core:

Direct and reverse item scores are established first, then ten keyed values are summed for each scale.

Here, x is the selected 1 to 5 response, k is its keyed contribution, and S is one scale total. For example, a negative-keyed response of 4 contributes 2. Ten minimum keyed values produce 10; ten maximum values produce 50.

The official scale page reports coefficient alpha values from 0.66 for Attractiveness to 0.86 for Emotional Stability. These are group-level internal-consistency estimates from the source material, not margins of error for one person and not evidence that the scales are valid for every language, population, or decision.

Limitations and Privacy:

  • The seven scales are preliminary and provide no representative norms, percentile conversion, diagnostic cutoff, or selection rule here.
  • Scores summarize self-descriptions, not observed behavior, ability, clinical status, or moral character.
  • Responses remain in memory during the session. Restarting clears the response set and removes any shared fragment.
  • An optional copied link carries all 70 raw responses in its URL fragment. The fragment is compact but not encrypted or access-controlled.
  • Do not use these results for diagnosis, treatment, employment, admissions, insurance, legal, eligibility, or other consequential decisions.
