Interpersonal behavior often varies along two broad questions: how much a person takes charge versus yields, and how warm versus distant their manner tends to be. A circumplex arranges combinations of those tendencies around a circle. Neighboring positions share more qualities than positions across the circle, so the pattern is relational rather than a set of unrelated boxes.

The 32-item IPIP Interpersonal Circumplex (IPIP-IPC) uses eight four-item octants. Each octant names a style direction, from Assured-Dominant through Warm-Agreeable and Aloof-Introverted. Most people endorse several neighboring tendencies to different degrees; the profile does not force one fixed interpersonal type.

Context matters. The same person may be more dominant at work, more yielding in a close relationship, or quieter among strangers. Self-report also depends on whom the respondent compares themselves with and how they interpret broad phrases about social behavior.

The result is useful for voluntary reflection, education, and research preparation. It is not a diagnosis, relationship verdict, employment screen, or normed personality type, and no octant is universally better than its opposite.

How to Use This Tool:

Rate how accurately each phrase describes how you generally are now, using the same comparison frame for all 32 items.

  1. Choose Start assessment and answer from Very inaccurate through Very accurate.
  2. Complete every statement. Use Previous to correct an answer; the octant profile is calculated only after all 32 responses are valid.
  3. Read the eight raw octant totals together rather than selecting the largest value as a permanent type.
  4. Open answer review when two octants are close or a result feels unfamiliar. The four contributing responses show why each total took its value.

Interpreting Results:

Each octant total runs from 4 to 20. A larger value means stronger endorsement of that named interpersonal direction among its four statements. Because all octants share the same item count and response scale, their raw totals can be compared within one completed profile.

  • Look for clusters of neighboring octants, not only the single largest total.
  • Treat opposite-octant differences as descriptive tendencies, not proof that one style is absent.
  • Do not call 12 average or use another midpoint as a norm. No comparison sample or category is applied.
  • Small gaps can reflect one answer because each octant has only four items.
  • Keep administration conditions consistent when comparing repeated profiles.

Technical Details:

The official 32-item scoring key assigns four statements to each of eight octants. Every item is positive-keyed, so the raw response value is also its score contribution. The profile contains eight separate sums and no overall interpersonal score.

For octant d, the raw total Td is the sum of its four response values. Each value is an integer from 1 through 5.

A four-item response pattern of 5, 4, 3, and 2 produces an octant total of 14. The same arithmetic applies to every octant, but 14 has no source-defined high, average, or low label.

The circular arrangement is interpretive context for the eight named scales. No separate dominance, warmth, angular position, type, or distance score is calculated.

Limitations and Privacy:

Four items give each octant a brief snapshot. Situation, culture, language, mood, and self-presentation can affect results, and no representative norm or consequential-decision validation is applied.

  • Do not use the profile for diagnosis, treatment, hiring, admissions, eligibility, or relationship decisions.
  • Responses remain in memory during the session and are not sent for server scoring.
  • An optional copied link contains all 32 raw responses in an unencrypted URL fragment.
  • Restarting clears the in-memory session and removes any shared fragment.
