An asphalt order begins with a finished paved footprint and the compacted layer that will cover it. Area multiplied by compacted depth gives volume; volume multiplied by the proposed mix density gives mass. Each measurement describes the finished work, not the loose material before placement and rolling.

Small changes in depth or density scale the entire order. A 10% increase in compacted depth adds 10% to the base mass when area and density stay fixed. That makes a designer’s specified depth and a supplier’s job-mix density more reliable than a generic rule of thumb.

Supplier units matter. A metric tonne is 1,000 kg, while a U.S. short ton is 907.18474 kg. Billing increments and truck payloads also affect the practical order even when the geometric need is unchanged.

This calculation estimates material quantity; it does not design pavement thickness, verify structural capacity, set compaction requirements, or replace a project specification. Confirm the mix, compacted depth, density, minimum order, legal payload, and dispatch plan before ordering.

How to Use This Tool:

Use measurements for the finished asphalt surface and supplier values for the proposed mix and delivery.

  1. Choose Length × width for one rectangular footprint or Measured area for a takeoff, survey, or combined paved area.
  2. Enter the finished compacted depth and compacted mix density. Changing a unit converts the displayed quantity without changing its physical size.
  3. Set an allowance from 0% to 25%, select metric tonnes or U.S. short tons, and enter the supplier’s rounding increment and the hauler’s usable truck capacity.
  4. Open Advanced only if a material price is known. Review the rounded supplier order, truckload count, and estimate ledger before requesting a quote.

Interpreting Results:

Recommended order is the compacted mass plus the entered allowance, rounded upward to the supplier increment. The difference between unrounded need and the recommended order comes from supplier rounding, not added waste.

  • Use the truckload count for delivery planning only. Confirm route-specific legal payload and dispatch practice with the hauler.
  • A $0 material price leaves quantity unchanged and intentionally omits cost.
  • If the result seems high or low, first check compacted versus loose depth, density units, and metric tonne versus short ton.

Technical Details:

All dimensions are converted to metres, area to square metres, depth to metres, density to kilograms per cubic metre, and mass to kilograms before the order is expressed in the selected supplier unit. This keeps equivalent metric and U.S. customary inputs physically consistent.

Formula Core:

Base compacted mass is area times compacted depth times compacted density.

M0 = A×d×ρ

A is paved area in m², d is compacted depth in m, and ρ is compacted density in kg/m³. The allowance is applied before supplier rounding.

w is the allowance percentage and I is the supplier increment in kilograms. When the increment is 0, the unrounded allowed mass is retained instead of applying the ceiling rule.

For a 20 m × 4 m footprint, 75 mm compacted depth, and 2,320 kg/m³ density, the compacted volume is 6 m³ and base mass is 13,920 kg. A 5% allowance raises the need to 14,616 kg; rounding upward to 0.1 metric tonne produces a 14.7-tonne supplier order.

Accuracy Notes:

The arithmetic can be exact for the supplied values while the real order remains an estimate. The largest uncertainties usually come from footprint measurement, variable depth, unsuitable generic density, site corrections, supplier minimums, and the difference between nominal and usable truck payload.

  • The calculator assumes one uniform compacted depth and density across the entered area.
  • Optional cost covers asphalt material only; haul, labor, equipment, tax, testing, and other project costs are excluded.
