The 17 characters of a vehicle identification number (VIN) connect a vehicle to information reported by its manufacturer. Decoding can reveal the model year, make, model, engine, body type or assembly plant, depending on the records available. These details help when comparing a vehicle with a sales listing, checking paperwork or preparing a recall enquiry.
Make identifies the vehicle brand, while model identifies the vehicle family. Model year is the manufacturer's designation and can differ from the calendar year of production. Trim, series and engine details can narrow the description further, but a missing value does not establish that a vehicle lacks that feature.
A VIN identifies an individual vehicle, while a year, make and model describes a vehicle type. That difference determines what a recall search can tell you.
| Check | Information used | What it can establish |
|---|---|---|
| VIN decoding | A VIN and manufacturer decoding records | Reported identity and specifications associated with that VIN. |
| General recall search | Model year, make and model | Campaigns recorded for that vehicle type, including the reported problem and remedy. |
| Vehicle-specific recall check | The VIN checked through an official service or the manufacturer | Whether a particular vehicle needs a reported recall repair, within that service's coverage. |
A recall campaign describes a safety defect or a failure to meet applicable safety standards and the action intended to address it. A year, make and model can cover vehicles with different equipment or production histories. A campaign returned for that combination therefore needs a separate check of its applicability to the individual VIN and whether the remedy has already been completed.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) maintains the Product Information Catalog and Vehicle Listing, known as vPIC, using manufacturer-reported data. Its decoded specifications describe the manufacturer's record, not a physical inspection of the vehicle. They do not authenticate the VIN or establish ownership, title, accident history or mileage history. Coverage also varies by vehicle and market, so an incomplete record is not proof that the vehicle is illegitimate.
How to Use This Tool:
Decode one vehicle first, then confirm the identity used for the separate general recall search.
- Enter the full VIN from the vehicle or its records in VIN (17 characters). Lowercase letters and surrounding whitespace are normalized. If several nonblank lines are pasted, only the first is used and the number of ignored items is shown.
A format warning means the VIN must contain exactly 17 letters and digits, without I, O, Q, internal spaces or masks. Compare it with the vehicle record and correct the entry before decoding.
- Enter the documented model year under Advanced when you know it. Model-year hint (optional) starts blank and accepts 1981 to 2099 inclusive. Leave it blank when the model year is unknown.
- Choose Decode VIN, or press Enter in the VIN field. Read the returned identity and Decode status before proceeding. Available specifications remain readable when the result is Partial / review needed, but recall confirmation requires Complete decode.
- Check Model year, Make and Model under Confirm the vehicle for general recalls against the vehicle record. These values are filled from a complete decode and can be edited because naming can differ between NHTSA datasets. Make and model must each be nonempty and no longer than 100 characters.
- Choose Search general recalls after confirming those values. In General recalls, read the campaign's Consequence, Remedy and Notes to identify the manufacturer follow-up needed.
Interpreting Results:
Complete decode means the returned identity passed the checks described below. It does not mean every specification is populated. In Vehicle details, Not supplied means the provider did not supply a usable value for that field. For example, an absent engine-power value is not zero power, and an absent secondary-fuel value does not confirm a single-fuel vehicle.
Compare the reported body, engine, fuel and plant details with the vehicle's records when they matter to your decision. The values are manufacturer-reported information, with engine displacement shown in litres and engine power in kilowatts when supplied. They do not verify the condition or equipment currently fitted to the vehicle.
Campaign narratives and flags
The campaign number identifies the recall record. Component and Summary describe the affected system and reported problem, while Consequence explains the risk. Read Remedy and Notes for instructions, restrictions and contact information rather than judging urgency from the number of campaigns.
Park it, Park outside and OTA update retain three distinct provider states. OTA means over-the-air software updating.
| Displayed state | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Flagged | The provider explicitly marked that flag as true. |
| Not flagged by provider | The provider explicitly marked that flag as false. |
| Not supplied | The flag was absent or unknown. No negative conclusion is supported. |
If Park it or Park outside is Flagged, read the current campaign instructions and contact the manufacturer or its dealer. Follow the manufacturer's applicable do-not-drive or park-outside instructions. An unflagged or missing value does not override those instructions, and an OTA flag does not show that software has been installed or a recall repair completed.
No campaigns returned means that an accepted search returned no records for the confirmed year, make and model. Check that naming matches the intended vehicle and use the official NHTSA VIN recall service or the manufacturer for a vehicle-specific follow-up. An invalid, unavailable or cancelled search supplies no campaign finding. An empty or failed search cannot establish that the vehicle is safe or has no recalls.
The Campaign timeline helps locate campaigns by report year. Saved timeline images retain the confirmed year, make and model, the general-campaign scope, the warning that they do not show VIN repair status, and the number of omitted undated campaigns when present.
If the chart is unavailable, campaign dates and narratives remain readable in General recalls, and Retry chart can be used.
Technical Details:
vPIC interprets a VIN using decoding information submitted by manufacturers. The local input check establishes the accepted character format only. It does not calculate a VIN check digit or authenticate a vehicle. Specification decoding and general campaign retrieval use separate NHTSA records, so a successful decode does not itself perform a recall search.
Rule core for a complete decode
A complete result requires agreement across the returned VIN, provider status and vehicle identity. Code 0 alone is insufficient. All of the following conditions must hold.
| Evidence | Required condition |
|---|---|
| Returned VIN | The complete returned VIN matches the submitted VIN after case normalization. |
| vPIC status codes | Every returned status code is 0. |
| Model year | One four-digit year from 1981 to 2099 inclusive is supplied. |
| Make and model | Both values are present and nonempty. |
| Optional year hint | If supplied, it agrees with the returned model year. |
| Suggested VIN | No different VIN has been suggested. A suggestion is displayed for review and is never substituted automatically. |
A usable response carrying any nonzero status code, including code 6 or a combination containing both 0 and a nonzero code, is shown as Partial / review needed. Missing identity information, a conflicting year hint or a different suggested VIN has the same effect.
A shortened or masked VIN returned with code 6 can be retained as partial information only when its known characters agree with the submitted VIN. It cannot demonstrate a complete full-VIN decode. An unrelated returned VIN, a missing status or an unusable response is rejected instead of being accepted as a decoded identity. Although vPIC itself supports some partial decoding, this tool accepts only full VIN input.
Matching general campaigns to the confirmed vehicle
The recall search uses the confirmed model year, make and model. This combination describes a vehicle type and does not carry the individual VIN. Editing the confirmation fields changes that search without rewriting the manufacturer-reported specifications.
The confirmed year must be from 1981 to 2099 inclusive. Make and model are trimmed, must contain no control characters, and must each contain 1 to 100 characters. Returned campaigns must match that year exactly and match the make and model without regard to letter case. Different punctuation or model names are not treated as automatic aliases.
An accepted campaign response contains 0 to 500 records, with its stated total matching the records received. Campaign numbers must be unique and contain two digits, one uppercase letter and six digits. A duplicate number, mismatched vehicle, malformed flag, inconsistent total or invalid nonempty date makes the response unusable. The lookup does not quietly discard those records and present the remainder as a complete list.
Missing optional campaign descriptions display Not supplied. Oversized responses are rejected rather than shortened into an apparently complete result.
Counting campaigns by report year
A report year comes from the campaign's report-received date, not the vehicle's model year or the date a repair was performed. Report dates retain the provider's original text. Accepted dates use DD/MM/YYYY or MM/DD/YYYY, with a valid calendar date and a year from 1900 to 2099 inclusive. When both day/month orders are possible, only the shared year is used.
Each accepted campaign with a valid report date contributes one to its report-year count. The count for year y is:
Here N is the total number of accepted campaigns. Each term in the sum is 1 when campaign i has a valid report date in year y, and 0 otherwise. Counts are whole campaigns and require no rounding.
Undated campaigns remain in the campaign table and overall total but contribute to no yearly bar. Only years represented by dated campaigns are plotted. The table groups newer report years first and uses campaign numbers within a year, so it should not be read as an exact day-by-day ordering.
These counts do not measure severity, affected vehicles, accidents or outstanding repairs. For repeat checks, compare results for the same confirmed year, make and model. Provider updates may change what later searches return.
Coverage and freshness
vPIC is intended for model years 1981 onward and primarily represents vehicles intended for sale or importation into the United States. A valid-looking VIN for another market may have limited data. Accepting a year through 2099 is an input boundary, not a promise that data exists for every year, manufacturer or model.
NHTSA describes its general recall dataset as updated daily. That publication schedule does not guarantee that a newly announced campaign or every relevant vehicle has already appeared. A fresh request retrieves the response available at that time; results are not continuously refreshed.
The separate official VIN recall service also has coverage limits. It does not show completed recall repairs, some recently announced recalls awaiting VIN identification, international recalls or all older and small-manufacturer campaigns. Its usual 15-year recall window does not define the scope of the general campaign list here. The manufacturer or its dealer can help resolve applicability and repair-history questions that the available records leave unanswered.
Privacy and Request Handling:
Choosing Decode VIN sends the full VIN and any supplied year hint directly to NHTSA vPIC. Typing, correcting an entry or opening Advanced does not send a lookup. The separate general recall request sends only the confirmed year, make and model to NHTSA.
The VIN, confirmation values and results are not added to the page address or saved in browser storage. They remain in the current page and are cleared by reloading. This temporary browser behavior does not establish how NHTSA handles or retains requests it receives.
- Each request has a 15-second deadline and a maximum reply size of 1 MiB, or 1,048,576 bytes. A timeout or unsupported response produces a failure message.
- Cancel decode stops waiting without accepting a vehicle result. Cancel search clears the recall search while keeping vehicle details available. Cancellation cannot undo information already sent to NHTSA.
- Changing the VIN or year hint clears the previous decode and recall results. Changing a recall confirmation field clears only the campaigns and timeline. Late replies from superseded requests are not applied to the new input.
Retries require another explicit action. If NHTSA limits requests, wait before trying again; the tool does not retry automatically. A failed recall lookup leaves the decoded vehicle details available.
CSV copies and downloads add a leading apostrophe to text that could be treated as a spreadsheet formula. The displayed vehicle and campaign values remain unchanged.
Copy vehicle summary deliberately omits the VIN. Copies or downloads of the full Vehicle details table include its VIN row, so check which information you intend to share. Downloaded files and clipboard contents are separate from the page's temporary state.
Worked Examples:
A year hint that conflicts with the decoded year
Suppose the model-year hint is 2013, while vPIC returns 2012 with code 0 and otherwise complete identity information. The result remains Partial / review needed, and recall confirmation is unavailable. Check the documented model year, correct the hint if it was wrong, and decode again. The returned year is not silently changed to match the hint.
Three campaigns with only two dated entries
A hypothetical search for a confirmed vehicle returns three valid, distinct campaigns. Their report dates are 28/02/2024, 01/04/2025 and Not supplied. The overall total is three, while the timeline shows one campaign in 2024 and one in 2025, with one undated campaign omitted. The undated record and its remedy remain in General recalls, so a missing chart bar is no reason to skip that record.
