Remembering where symbols appeared lets you choose known pairs rather than guess. In a matching-pairs game, cards start face down with two copies of each symbol. A turn reveals two different cards. Matching symbols complete a pair, while a mismatch hides the cards again without moving them. Even an unsuccessful turn can leave useful information for a later attempt.

When another star appears after you have already seen one, its remembered position gives you a specific second choice. If the first card's partner is still unknown, revealing an unseen card adds information about the board. Repeating the same unmatched combination spends another turn without uncovering a new position.

More cards mean more locations to keep apart. A longer look at a mismatch gives more time to remember it, but lengthens rounds that include many misses. A careful second choice can save a turn even when it takes longer to make, so the fewest turns and the shortest time need not come from the same round.

An unchanged arrangement is useful for practising specific positions. A faster replay may reflect knowledge of that layout rather than stronger performance on an unfamiliar board. The shuffle also affects which pairs you encounter early, so a low turn count can reflect lucky matches as well as recall.

How to Use This Tool:

The default setup is Quick · 6 pairs with Shapes & words and a 1-second mismatch reveal.

  1. Choose Classic · 8 pairs or Challenge · 12 pairs under Board size for a larger board, or keep 6 pairs. Symbols also offers Nature & words, and Mismatch reveal can be extended to 2 seconds.
  2. Enter a Layout seed of up to 64 characters, or keep memory-1. Spaces at the ends are removed before play. A blank or space-only seed disables Start matching; enter some non-space text to continue.
  3. Select Start matching, then tap or click two different concealed cards. Each revealed card shows a symbol and its word label. For keyboard play, use the arrow keys to move and Enter or Space to flip; Home and End jump to the first and last cards. Wait for a mismatch to hide before selecting another card.
  4. Use Pause, or press P with the game focused, when you need a break. The board is hidden and active time stops until Resume. The game also pauses when its tab is hidden or its window loses focus. Restart resets the cards, turns, and active time without changing the layout or settings.
  5. Match every pair to reach Every pair found! and the final results. Choose Replay same layout to practise that arrangement, New seed to keep the settings with a newly generated seed, or Change setup to return to the setup choices.

Interpreting Results:

Best for this setup ranks fewer turns first, then lower active time to break a tie. A completed 12-turn round therefore outranks a faster 13-turn round when both use the same setup. Active time measures running play rather than time remaining.

Best results are grouped by board size, symbol set, and mismatch reveal duration, not by seed. A record can therefore come from another layout or from practising a familiar one. Keep those three choices unchanged when comparing results, and distinguish first attempts from replays. Use Run details to check the seed and setup for a finished round.

Technical Details:

Card positions remain fixed throughout a round, including positions that have already been matched. A turn is counted only when two different, still-unmatched cards have been revealed.

Matching and turn counting

Matching and turn-counting rules for card selections during play
Selection What happens Turns added
First concealed, unmatched card One symbol is revealed while you choose its partner. 0
Second card with the same symbol Both cards stay face up as a completed pair. 1
Second card with a different symbol Both stay visible for the selected 1 or 2 seconds of active play, then hide. 1
Visible or matched card, or any card during a mismatch delay The selection is ignored and no additional card flips. 0

Only a mismatch has a timed reveal. The first card can stay open while you decide. Pausing midway through a mismatch preserves the remaining delay, which continues after resuming. Finding the last pair ends the round immediately, with no maximum turn count or time deadline.

Turns and displayed time

At completion, each turn has produced either one matched pair or one mismatch. The final turn count is their sum.

T = P + M

T is the final Turns count, P is the number of Pairs, and M is the number of mismatches. Completing an 8-pair board in 13 turns means 8 successful matches and 5 mismatches. The minimum final count is one turn per pair.

Active time starts when the round starts, not at the first flip. It advances in 0.1-second increments during running play, including mismatch delays. Displayed times discard the fractional second rather than round to the nearest second.

D = ⌊ A 1000 ⌋

A is recorded active time in milliseconds and D is the displayed total in whole seconds. A recorded 12.9 seconds appears as 0:12 during play and 12 s in the final results. Best-result ties use the recorded time before this rounding, so equal displayed times need not be exact ties.

Board construction and repeatability

Each board contains 6, 8, or 12 distinct symbols with two cards per symbol. All boards have four columns, giving 3, 4, or 6 rows respectively.

A layout seed is text that fixes the shuffle. Keeping the same seed and board size reproduces the matching positions under the same rules. Changing the symbol set replaces the pictures and words without moving the paired positions. The mismatch reveal duration does not change the shuffle.

FAQ:

What is saved when I leave the page?

Card matching, shuffling, and timing take place in your browser. The game saves best turns and active time for each setup, but not an unfinished board or a seed for automatic restoration. Reloading opens the default setup rather than resuming your round. If browser storage is unavailable, best results are kept only for the current visit. These personal game records have no monetary value.
