Passport photos are identity evidence, so their size and composition are judged together. A portrait can have the correct outer dimensions and still fail because the head is too large, too small, off-center, recently altered, poorly lit, or printed at the wrong scale. Paper-photo rules also differ from digital-upload instructions and from one authority to another.

The U.S. paper profile uses a square 51 × 51 mm photo with a crown-to-chin height from 25 to 35 mm. The UK paper profile uses a 35 × 45 mm photo with a crown-to-chin height from 29 to 34 mm. Both ranges include their lower and upper limits. Crown means the natural top of the head, not the highest point of the hair.

Composition guides measure only one part of acceptance. They do not assess recency, identity, facial expression, pose, background, lighting, shadows, sharpness, eyewear, head coverings, retouching, or print quality. A source portrait that already fails those requirements cannot be repaired by cropping it to the right rectangle.

A 300 ppi file also does not control the printer. Print dialogs often fit or shrink an image to the page, changing the physical dimensions. Print at 100% or Actual size, use suitable photo paper, and measure the finished photo before attaching it to an application.

These profiles are for paper applications. Where an authority asks for an original digital photo or applies automated upload checks, use that authority's digital-photo process instead of submitting a prepared paper crop.

How to Use This Tool:

Start with an original, high-resolution portrait that already meets the authority's appearance and background rules.

  1. Load one PNG, JPEG, or WebP portrait no larger than 10 MB, 8,192 pixels on either side, or 24 megapixels. The image is checked by its file signature before decoding.
  2. Choose the correct Authority profile and select either a single exact-size JPEG or two copies on a 4 × 6 inch sheet.
  3. Adjust Zoom and horizontal or vertical position until the face is composed correctly. Zoom changes the source crop while the selected output dimensions stay fixed.
  4. Place Crown guide at the natural top of the head and Chin guide at the bottom of the chin. Reduce zoom or choose a larger source if the crop has too few pixels for the fixed output raster.
  5. Review the measured head height, confirm the manual review switch, and prepare the JPEG. The acknowledgement confirms only that the guides and authority instructions were reviewed.
  6. Print at 100% or Actual size, measure the paper photo, and recheck the current official requirements before applying.

Interpreting Results:

Manual head height is the crown-to-chin distance implied by the two guides. Inside range means that measurement falls within the selected paper profile, including the endpoints. It is not an acceptance decision.

  • Source sufficiency compares the crop's source pixels with the fixed output raster. Insufficient means the photo would need silent upscaling, so preparation stops.
  • The single-photo artifact uses the profile's fixed pixel dimensions. The 4 × 6 inch sheet is 1,800 × 1,200 pixels at 300 ppi and places two copies with cut guides.
  • The preview cannot prove physical print size. Measure the printed width, height, and head height with a ruler.

Technical Details:

The selected authority profile supplies the target aspect ratio, physical dimensions, fixed raster dimensions, inclusive head-height range, and output filename. Cropping first fits the largest rectangle with that aspect ratio inside the source, then divides its width and height by the zoom ratio. Position controls move that smaller crop within the remaining horizontal and vertical space.

The head measurement converts the vertical separation between the manual guides into millimetres using the selected photo height.

For the U.S. profile, guides at 20% and 80% give (80 − 20) / 100 × 51 mm = 30.6 mm. For the UK profile, 15% and 85% give 31.5 mm. Both results are inside their respective inclusive ranges.

The crop changes framing only. It does not mirror, retouch, enhance, replace the background, or alter the subject's appearance.

Limitations and Privacy Notes:

The portrait is decoded and prepared in the current browser session. It is not uploaded or placed in a shareable URL, and temporary object URLs are released when the image is replaced or the page closes.

  • The profiles can become outdated when an authority changes its guidance. Recheck the official page for every application.
  • Guide placement is manual and can be wrong. No face, pose, lighting, background, expression, recency, or authenticity check is performed.
  • A prepared crop is not an acceptance certificate and is not suitable for a digital submission that requires the original uncropped photo.
  • Keep passport portraits private and delete unneeded copies from shared devices or print services.
