Broad personality scores can hide important combinations. Someone may be socially energetic but private, orderly but impulsive in a narrow setting, or emotionally steady while reacting strongly to criticism. The Abridged Big Five-Dimensional Circumplex (AB5C) describes patterns like these by pairing directions from the Big Five rather than reducing a person to five isolated numbers.

The preliminary International Personality Item Pool (IPIP) AB5C set contains 45 facet scales. Each facet has a provisional name such as Gregariousness, Cooperation, Cautiousness, Calmness, or Creativity, together with a pole code showing the two Big Five directions it represents. The result is a detailed profile of keyed response means, not a personality type or an overall score.

Primary factor
The first Roman numeral in a facet code identifies its main Big Five direction.
Secondary factor
The second numeral shows the adjacent direction that helps distinguish the facet from other scales under the same primary factor.
Positive and negative poles
A plus or minus sign names the end of each factor represented by the keyed statements; it is not a judgment that one end is good and the other bad.

The full form is unusually long: 486 statements contribute to 45 scales containing 8 to 14 items each. That depth can separate nearby traits more clearly than a short Big Five questionnaire, but it also makes attention, fatigue, and rushed responding important sources of error.

These scales are preliminary and were developed for descriptive and research use. They do not supply individual percentiles, diagnostic cutoffs, hiring standards, or evidence that a high or low facet mean is desirable. Use the profile for voluntary reflection, education, or appropriately designed research, never for diagnosis, selection, eligibility, or ranking another person.

How to Use This Tool:

Interpreting Results:

Every facet mean runs from 1 to 5. A higher value means stronger endorsement of the positive pole named for that facet after negatively keyed statements are reversed. It does not mean better functioning, greater worth, or higher standing than other people.

  • Compare facets within the same completed response set to notice relative emphasis, while remembering that the official source provides no individual norm table.
  • Read the pole code with the facet name. Similar everyday labels can represent different combinations of the five underlying factors.
  • Check item-level answers before drawing meaning from an unexpected mean, especially after a long session or when several statements felt ambiguous.
  • Treat the two-item neutral demo as a display sample only; its remaining 484 neutral responses do not describe you.

Small gaps between facets should not be turned into firm categories. Mood, language, culture, self-presentation, the situation imagined while answering, and fatigue can all change a self-report profile. A meaningful comparison across sessions also requires the same form, response scale, and similar answering conditions.

Technical Details:

AB5C facets occupy positions formed by pairs of Big Five factor poles. The first factor carries the main loading and the second refines the location, so the facet code is part of the construct name rather than a decorative label. The official preliminary table groups nine facets under each primary factor.

Each raw response is an integer from 1 to 5. Positive-keyed items keep that value; negative-keyed items reverse it. The facet result is the arithmetic mean of all keyed item scores assigned to that facet.

Here, x is the selected response, k is its keyed contribution, n is the number of items in facet f, and M is the facet mean. A negative-keyed response of 2 therefore contributes 4. Because item counts vary from 8 to 14, means keep every facet on a comparable theoretical 1 to 5 response scale.

The official preliminary table reports coefficient alpha values for its development sample, ranging from 0.66 to 0.86 across the 45 scales. Those group-level reliability estimates do not turn an individual raw mean into a percentile, diagnose a condition, or establish suitability for a consequential decision.

Limitations and Privacy:

  • The inventory is a preliminary English self-report measure. Its item meanings and measurement properties may not carry unchanged across languages, cultures, populations, or administration settings.
  • No incomplete profile is scored. Fatigue or patterned answering can still reduce the usefulness of a technically complete response set.
  • Responses remain in memory during the session. Restarting clears that session and removes a shared fragment.
  • A copied link contains all 486 raw responses in its URL fragment. Encoding is not encryption, so anyone who receives the link can recover the answers.
  • The profile is not appropriate for diagnosis, treatment, hiring, admissions, eligibility, insurance, legal decisions, or ranking people.
