Dissociative experiences can involve gaps in awareness or memory, a sense of detachment, feelings of unreality, or becoming so absorbed that surrounding events receive little attention. Individual experiences can have many explanations, ranging from ordinary absorption and fatigue to stress, medication effects, substance use, sleep problems, neurological conditions, or mental-health concerns.

The preliminary 31-item International Personality Item Pool (IPIP) Dissociation full scale records how accurately a set of such experiences describes the respondent in general. It produces one continuous raw score. The score organizes the answers for research or structured reflection; it does not identify the cause of an experience or diagnose a dissociative disorder.

  • A single total combines several kinds of experience, so the same score can arise from different response patterns.
  • The form has no fixed recall window. Answers may change depending on which period or situations a respondent has in mind.
  • The official IPIP source provides no diagnostic cutoff, severity band, or individual treatment rule for this preliminary scale.

A raw total near the top of the possible range means that more of the listed experiences were endorsed as accurate, or were endorsed more strongly. It does not show how often they happen, how long they last, how distressing they are, whether they impair daily life, or why they occur. Those questions require context that a summed self-report cannot provide.

Use the result for voluntary reflection, education, or appropriately governed research. If experiences are frightening, cause memory or safety problems, interfere with daily life, or follow a medical or substance-related change, seek an assessment from a qualified health professional rather than relying on this score.

How to Use This Tool:

Answer with a consistent view of your experiences in general; the instrument does not specify a recent-day or recent-month recall period.

  1. Select Start assessment and read each statement in full before choosing an accuracy rating.
  2. Rate every statement from Very inaccurate to Very accurate. Choose the neutral option when neither direction describes you better.
  3. Use the progress bar and navigator to find any unanswered statement. All 31 responses are required for the raw total.
  4. Read the total only as a position within the possible 31 to 155 range, then use the answer review to see which experiences contributed most strongly.
  5. Copy a result link only if you are comfortable placing all 31 raw responses in a URL fragment that is encoded but not encrypted.

Interpreting Results:

The result is a continuous raw sum from 31 to 155. A larger number means stronger overall endorsement of the experiences represented by these statements. It is not a probability, percentile, diagnosis, severity category, or recommendation for treatment.

Review the item pattern instead of treating the sum as the whole story. Two people with the same total may endorse very different experiences. For repeated use, keep the intended time frame and answering conditions consistent, and avoid interpreting a small change as proof of improvement or decline.

Technical Details:

All 31 items are positively keyed. The response choices use integer codes from 1 for Very inaccurate through 5 for Very accurate. No item is reversed, weighted, omitted, or imputed, and a result is produced only from a complete set of legal response codes.

Here, x is one item's selected response and S is the raw score. Thirty-one responses of 1 produce the minimum 31, while thirty-one responses of 5 produce the maximum 155. Scores are integers because every item contributes an unmodified integer.

The official scale listing reports coefficient alpha of 0.90 for the source scale. That group-level internal-consistency estimate does not establish diagnostic validity, an individual confidence interval, or equivalence across populations and translations.

Limitations and Privacy:

  • The preliminary scale has no official diagnostic cutoff, clinical severity band, or individual interpretive guide.
  • Self-report cannot distinguish ordinary absorption from experiences related to stress, sleep, medication, substances, medical conditions, or mental-health conditions.
  • No fixed recall period is supplied, which can reduce comparability between respondents or repeated sessions.
  • Responses remain in memory during the session. Restarting clears the session and removes the URL fragment.
  • A copied link contains the selected responses in an encoded URL fragment. Anyone with that link can recover them because encoding is not encryption.
  • Do not use the result for diagnosis, treatment, employment, education, eligibility, insurance, legal, or other consequential decisions.
