Answer review

A task can feel difficult for different reasons. It may demand sustained attention, physical effort, speed, persistence, or emotional control. Subjective workload records that lived experience after a defined task so researchers and designers can compare task versions without pretending that completion time or error count tells the whole story.

The NASA Task Load Index, usually shortened to NASA-TLX, separates workload into six dimensions: Mental Demand, Physical Demand, Temporal Demand, Performance, Effort, and Frustration. Five scales run from very low to very high. Performance follows the official direction from perfect to failure, so a higher Performance rating means the person felt less successful.

Magnitude
Each dimension receives a rating from 0 to 100 in steps of 5 for the task just completed.
Importance
Fifteen pairwise choices show which dimensions contributed more to workload in that task.
Task context
The activity, conditions, participant, and timing define what the ratings mean. A score without that context is hard to compare responsibly.

Pairwise weighting matters because two people can give similar ratings yet disagree about what drove the workload. A high mental-demand rating may receive little weight if time pressure dominated every comparison, while a moderate frustration rating can strongly affect the weighted score when it is repeatedly chosen as the more important source.

NASA-TLX is descriptive, not a universal pass-or-fail test. It does not diagnose a health condition, certify that a task is safe, or define one acceptable workload cutoff for every setting. Comparisons are strongest when the task definition, administration timing, instructions, and scoring method remain consistent.

How to Use This Tool:

Complete the assessment immediately after one clearly defined task or interaction. Keep that same task in mind through both the ratings and pairwise comparisons.

  1. Select Start workload rating, then rate all six workload dimensions from 0 to 100. Remember that the Performance scale runs from perfect toward failure.
  2. For each of the 15 pairs, choose the dimension that contributed more to workload in the completed task. Choose importance, not simply the dimension with the larger rating.
  3. Finish the assessment only after every rating and comparison is complete. If progress stops, return to the unanswered item rather than estimating a partial score.
  4. Read the Weighted workload score with the six dimension ratings and their pairwise weights. Use the separate Raw TLX mean only as an unweighted comparison.

Interpreting Results:

A higher weighted score means greater perceived workload for this completed task. The dimension chart explains where that workload came from: each rating shows magnitude, while its weight shows how often the dimension was selected as the more important source.

Do not attach a universal label such as acceptable, unsafe, or excessive to one number. Compare results only across documented tasks or conditions that used the same instructions and timing, and examine performance or safety evidence separately when those outcomes matter.

Technical Details:

The weighted paper-and-pencil procedure combines six magnitude ratings with six weights derived from every possible pair of dimensions. Each dimension can be selected from 0 to 5 times, and the six weights must total 15.

Formula Core

The official weighted workload score is the sum of each rating multiplied by its pairwise weight, divided by the 15 comparisons.

Transformation Core

Each of the 15 pairwise choices adds one to the selected dimension's weight. Multiplying ratings by those counts carries the more important workload sources into the final average.

For example, ratings of 70, 20, 60, 30, 65, and 40 with weights of 4, 0, 5, 1, 3, and 2 produce a weighted sum of 885. Dividing by 15 gives 59.0, while the unweighted Raw TLX mean is 47.5. The difference shows how the pairwise choices changed the emphasis.

Limitations and Privacy:

Workload ratings depend on memory, interpretation, and task framing. They are most useful alongside objective measures and repeated, comparable administrations. Results stay in browser memory until reset, but a copied share link contains all six ratings and 15 pairwise selections in its URL fragment. That link is portable, not encrypted or access-controlled.
