Kidding preparation begins with a breeding record, but a service date does not identify one guaranteed delivery day. Goat gestation commonly spans about five months. Merck Veterinary Manual gives a broad range of 145 to 155 days with a 150-day average, while Penn State's meat-goat planning range is 148 to 152 days.

Breed, litter weight, environment, parity, and the accuracy of the breeding record can shift the actual date. An exact observed service supports a narrower calendar than an exposure period in which mating could have occurred on several days. When the record is a range, its uncertainty should carry through to the kidding window instead of being collapsed into one date.

  • A predicted midpoint is useful for feed, housing, staffing, and record planning.
  • The early and late dates show the full calendar window supported by the selected reference and breeding record.
  • Pregnancy testing and veterinary examination answer questions that date arithmetic cannot.

Ultrasonography and serum testing may confirm pregnancy from about 30 days after breeding, and ultrasonography can help count fetuses during a later window. Those are clinical procedures, not conclusions produced by a due-date estimate.

How to Use This Tool:

Use the most specific breeding record available and choose the gestation reference that matches the planning context.

  1. Choose Exact service date for one recorded mating date or Exposure date range when mating could have occurred across several days. Enter the first and last possible dates in order; the supported exposure interval is no more than 62 days.
  2. Select the broad all-goat reference of 145 to 155 days or the meat-goat planning reference of 148 to 152 days. Neither range predicts an individual doe's exact delivery.
  3. Add an optional doe or herd note and choose only the planning milestones you need. These dates are record prompts, not treatment instructions.
  4. Read the estimated kidding window before the midpoint. If the breeding record changes, update the first and last possible service dates so every milestone moves with the revised evidence.

Interpreting Results:

The earliest kidding date uses the first possible service date and the low end of the selected gestation range. The latest kidding date uses the last possible service date and the high end. The midpoint uses the middle of the service record plus the 150-day average.

Treat the midpoint as a planning center, not a deadline. A doe outside the expected pattern, showing abnormal discharge, prolonged straining, weakness, pain, appetite loss, or other concerning signs needs veterinary assessment rather than a calendar adjustment.

Technical Details:

The calculation uses whole civil calendar dates, so daylight-saving changes and time-of-day differences do not shift the answer. An exact service record uses one date for both ends. A range retains the number of days between its first and last possible service dates.

Optional milestones are also added as whole days from the service record. Pregnancy confirmation is placed at day 30. The fetal-counting window spans days 40 to 70. Late-gestation review begins at day 100, and close watch spans ten days before through ten days after the 150-day average.

For a service date of 1 March 2026 under the broad reference, the calculated window is 24 July to 3 August 2026, with a midpoint of 29 July. If the possible service period runs through 5 March, the latest date extends to 7 August and the midpoint moves to 31 July.
